My Lenses for Various Genres
I have been busy capturing moments and living life that suddenly I realised that I have not been updating here for some time. Here is a quick entry to say that I am still alive, and things have been moving fast for me, way too fast I reckon.
So here is a quick share on the various lenses I use for various genres. In fact, at the end I would just recommend a good 3 combi-lens kit and that would cover 90% of the shoots I do!
Portrait
I love shooting people, and this is unassumingly my favourite genre. Over the years I have tried, evaluated, and honed a variety of combinations for my portrait but I will always go back to these few choices.
I am going to share 3 of my go-to lenses for my portrait and that would cover the full spectrum of my portrait work be it outdoor street or indoor enclosed studio/room.
1. Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4
This lens is really an all-rounder which have not failed to produce the results I want. Throw it outdoor street or indoor boudoir, its focal range of 50mm can accommodate both longer and tighter spaces.
2. Samyang AF 85mm f1.4
This is an excellent piece of gem! It is extremely affordable and produces pristine look. With its focal range while having that f1.4 gives buttery smooth bokeh which helps to isolate subject extremely well! I am a Nikon NPS member, but this lens is seriously on par with their 85mm lenses.
3. Tamron G2 24-70mm f2.8
This lens is yet another all-rounder as I am able to hit a creative range of 24mm and other spots of 50mm and 70mm all in one. This lens is my ‘safe’ lens that can produce results on most given situations.
Event
1. Tamron G2 24-70mm f2.8
I do not need to explain much about this lens as it gives me a lot of versatility for my event work.
2. Nikkor AF-S 14-24mm f2.8
Somewhat heavy but it gives me a lot of width to shoot that needed wide angle of event overview or where my space limited for example, behind the DJ booth. (I have a lighter and easy-to-carry Samyang 14mm f2.8 which I sometimes replace with)
3. Samyang AF 85mm f1.4
I have already explained how good this lens is at its price point. During event, this lens gives me the much-needed reach to isolate my subjects.
Product
1. Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro
Must have for smaller items such as jewelries, stationary products, etc.
2. Tamron G2 24-70mm f2.8
Have already explained this versatile lens and it is indefinitely my ‘workhorse’ lens.
Travel (Non-work related)
1. Samyang 14mm f2.8
My widest lens to take landscape, astro, street, room, etc.
2. Nikkor 50mm f1.4 OR Samyang 85mm f1.4
Just a nifty fifty small enough to bring along on every trip or the 85mm if I wish to take more isolated shots, I tap on both their f1.4 for clean night shots as well.
3. Nikkor Z 24-70mm f4
This is a much smaller and lighter lens for travel or event short clips during travels as compared to my workhorse Tamron 24-70mm f2.8
Finally, if I can only pick 3 lenses for most situations. (Including keeping it light) - These would be the combination of lenses from my arsenal which should be able to accommodate/make-do with 90% of all photography situations I encounter.
- Samyang AF 14mm f2.8
- Nikkor AF-S 50mm f1.4
- Samyang AF 85mm f1.4
Interestingly, all prime lenses! =p
Cheers,
Jay.C
